Johnetta Cook, Noth Stafford High School's theatre director, wants to prove that theater canon is still relevant today.
STAFFORD, VA (Catholic Online) - 31 students will be performing "West Side Story" in the school's auditorium this weekend. The event is for the public.
"West Side Story" is about two rival gangs in New York City during the 50's. The main point of the play is the love story between two members of opposing gangs.
Cook's students have rehearsed for more than 30 hours a week since around the middle of December. Practice and rehearsals lasted until up to 7:30 at night during the week. On Saturdays, Cook held six-hour rehearsals.
"It's one of my favorite musicals and a very appropriate play because last year was the film's 50th anniversary," Cook said. "It is a perfect show for the school's diverse student body. It resonates with what teens go through and shows peer pressure and social issues that are still relevant."
The event will take place at North Stafford High School, 839 Garrisonville Rd., Stafford, on Thursday, March 1 through Saturday, March 3 starting at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $10 at the door.
